Hospital Matters: U.S. Senator Tina Smith is a co-sponsor of the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act, which would establish a pilot program for training health professionals, who don’t regularly provide labor and delivery services, to be better prepared to assist with births. Smith talks about the bill in this episode of Hospital Matters and says its a small step to improving maternal health and birth outcomes, even as labor and delivery services recede in many rural areas in the U.S. The bill didn’t make it out of the last Congress, but it has bipartisan support, and Smith hopes it will eventually win approval in Washington. Smith also talks about the impact that potential Medicaid cuts may have in the next budget.
